English 9A
COURSE CONTENT:
All students will complete four years of English-language arts course in which they systematically develop their ability to read, write, listen to, and speak the English language and become more knowledgeable about their cultural heritage through reading literature. In addition to the required junior readings of Romeo and Juliet, To Kill A Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, and sections from Elements in Literature anthology, students will study various other novels, plays, short stories, and poems on the district’s enrichment list.
Students will also be given vocabulary words to study, with test to follow. Students will write a series of essays, including autobiographical incident, observation compare and contrast and expository. Journal writing, poetry, and creative writing will also be a part of the curriculum. All writing is to be kept in the students writing portfolio.
CLASS MATERIALS: Each student will be responsible for bringing their notebook, the assigned text, paper, and either a pen or pencil to class EVERYDAY. With anthologies there will be a class set so that students will not have to carry these heavy books to and from school.

GRADES: Students will earn grades through tests, quizzes, writing, homework, and class participation. The semester grade is cumulative from both quarters. Students who are candidates for an “A” must have 500 pages of outside reading completed before the semester ends. Grades will be based on a cumulative point total. Possible points earned are as follows:

EXCUSED ABSENCES AND MAKE-UP WORK: It is the responsibility of the student, not the teacher, to schedule a make-up exam within one week of a students return. Assignments missed during an excused absence of X days may be made up within X returning to class.
