Universal Vocabulary Work Page
Each week, you are to do at least 3 of these exercises. Number one or two should
be included each time. Sometimes I will assign specific exercises. Please choose
exercises that you think will help you remember the word and its use and meaning.
When you have gotten 2 consecutive perfect vocab quizzes, you may forego this exercise.
When you have missed a minimum of 2 words on a quiz, you must begin the work page
again. If you wish to do this on-line, you may download the form from my website
(see download forms) and complete the exercises for at least 3 words.
- Write each word and its definition
- Make a set of flash cards with the words on one side and the
definition on the other.
- Write a sentence using each word once
- Write a paragraph using at least 8 of the 10 words correctly.
Listing the words is not a correct use.
- Fold a piece of paper in thirds. In the first column, write
each word, in the second column, give a synonym for the word, in the third column,
give an antonym for the word. You may leave 4 blanks.
- Pick 5 words and use them in a poem of at least 10 lines that
demonstrates knowledge of the meanings and usage.
- Select 3 words. Draw pictures that explain the words (Pictionary)
- Write each of the words in a list, and next to the word, write
the name of someone who exemplifies that word. (Example: industrious - Henry Ford)
- Make a top ten list (ala David Letterman) using at least one
vocabulary word in each item.
- Make up a crossword puzzle using all 10 words. If you have
a puzzle making program this one is easy. And it may become a test! (to which you
know the answers)
- Select 5 words. Create a silly but useful mnemonic to help
you remember each word and its meaning.
- Fold your paper in half lengthwise and then fold it in half
lengthwise again. At the top of each column write a part of speech (noun, verb,
adjective, adverb). Write each vocab word in the correct column and then change
the word to a different part of speech, write the new word in the correct column.
Some words will have entries in each column; some will only have one or two entries.
Example: noun verb adjective adverb
difference differ different differently
You may combine the exercises - for example,
write the word and its definition,
then add a sentence,
then add a synonym,
then write a poem
