North Coast Section
Championships - Day 2 (02/26/05)
The Mission San Jose Warriors concluded
the 2004-2005 wrestling season placing two seniors in the top 8 of
their respective weight classes: Michael Lin (5th @ 119's) and Norell
Paredes (7th @ 125's). Sophomore Alex Kiehl, Mission's third
wrestler to advance on to the second day of NCS, just barely missed out
on earning himself a medal in the 112-pound weight class. Overall
as a team, Mission placed 28th out of 84 teams entered in the two-day
championships.
After
defeating Michael Nguyen of Livermore by a 4-0 decision in the opening
round on Saturday, Alex Kiehl fell one win shy of earning himself his
first NCS medal, losing to the eventual 5th-place award winner, Trent
Stevenson of Arcata, 11-2.
Probably the most pleasant surprise of the weekend
came from the outstanding performance of Michael Lin at 119
pounds. After defeating his first opponent by major decision on
Friday, Mike lost an 8-5 decision to the number 6 seeded wrestler, Ryan
Stirm of Northgate, an opponent Mike had defeated a couple weeks
earlier at the MSJ Invitational. Mike then recorded four straight
wins and found himself in the consolation semifinals against David
Prado of Freedom. A win would've secured a trip to the state
championships next weekend, but Mike unfortunately fell short of that
opportunity and dropped into the 5th-place match, where he would once
again face off against Stirm, who had lost in the other half of the
consolation semifinal. Things were different this time around, as
Mike came out very aggressively and concluded his MSJ wrestling career
in dominating fashion, pinning Stirm in 4:38.
Senior Norell Paredes, a 2004 NCS medalist at 119
pounds, earned himself a second NCS medal Saturday. After an
upsetting loss in round two action on Friday, Norell recorded three
straight wins, including two major decisions and a fall, before meeting
Colin Malcolm of James Logan in the consolation quarterfinal round,
where he dropped a tough 4-3 decision. That loss set Norell up in
the 7th-place match against Carlos Paredes of Ygnacio Valley.
Norell also wrapped up his high school wrestling career in style,
dominating his opponent with yet another technical fall, this time
scoring 19-4. Norell
concluded the NCS tournament with a 5-2 record, including two pins, a
technical fall and two major decisions.

North Coast Section
Championships - Day 1 (02/25/05)
After day one of the NCS Championships,
the Warriors only managed to advance 3 of the 9 wrestlers who qualified
this weekend. The tournament began on a down note, with news that
two of Mission's wrestlers would not be able to compete. Junior
Eddie Kang, the MVAL champion at 103 pounds, suffered a broken nose
during practice earlier
in the week while preparing for this weekend's championships.
This was a huge blow for the Warriors, as Eddie would've competed as
the number 8 seed, and had a shot to qualify for the state
championships next weekend in Bakersfield. Sophomore 160-pounder
Eric Adams also was unable to compete this weekend, after placing 3rd
at last week's MVAL Finals, due to medical reasons.
Advancing to day two of the NCS Championships are:
Alex Kiehl (112 lbs.), Michael Lin (119 lbs.), and Norell Paredes (125
lbs.), all competing in the consolation bracket.

MVAL Finals
(02/19/05)
The Mission San Jose Warriors
continued post-season
action in the Mission Valley Athletic League Finals Saturday at
Irvington High
School. The junior varsity kids successfully concluded this years
wrestling season on a high note, while the varsity squad looked ready
to continue on to next week's North Coast Section Championships, held
at Newark Memorial High School next Friday and Saturday.
On the varsity level, the Warriors managed to
qualify 9 out of its 11 wrestlers, including crowning two individual
league champions. At 103 lbs., Eddie Kang recorded a 15-4 major
decision over Storm Selsor (IRV) in the semifinals, before pinning Josh
Hyland (JL) in 4:58 in the championship match. At 125 lbs.,
Norell Paredes met Sonny Sominguit of Irvington in the championship match. Norell scored the only
takedown in regulation, but Sominguit scored on two escapes to send the
match into overtime tied at two. After several quick scrambles,
Norell managed to spin behind Sominguit for the two-point takedown and
the 1st-place medal in the 125-pound weight division. Also
advancing to the finals were
E. Alex Kiehl at 112 lbs., and Michael Lin at 119 lbs. Alex
advanced to the championship match after defeating Aron Roy of American
by technical fall, 17-2. In the final match, Alex came out to a
quick 6-2 lead before getting caught on his back at the 1:45 mark of
the first round. Number two-seed Michael Lin
suffered an 11-1 major decision loss to top-seeded Jacob Gire of James
Logan in
the championship final at 119 lbs. Mike advanced to the finals
with a 12-0 major decision over Josh Salazar of Newark Memorial in the
semifinals.
Congratulations also go out to David Grimm (130),
Chris Dzoan (135), Eric Bitzko (140), Eric Adams (160) and Daniel
Stoops (HWT) for qualifying to next week's NCS Championships.
David defeated Ferdinand Siquig of American 4-2 in the 3rd place match,
avenging a 20-10 loss he suffered to Siquig earlier this season at the
Alhambra Invitational. Chris recorded a 12-0 major decision over
David Allen of Irvington to advance on to next week. Eric Bitzko
claimed his 3rd place medal and NCS qualifying berth by defeating
Brittley Tringali of Irvington, 6-2. At 160 lbs., Eric Adams
claimed his first trip to NCS with a back-and-forth 11-9 decision over
Stephen Davis of Irvington. In the heavyweight division, freshman
Daniel Stoops avenged two previous losses, including one in Round 1
earlier on Saturday to Delvon King of James Logan, with a fall 29
seconds into the third period.
The junior varsity squad also had themselves a very
good tournament. With their continued dedication and committment
to this program, the future of Mission San Jose High School looks very
bright. Special congratulations go out to Ricky McFerrin (103
lbs.), Jason Hu (125 lbs.), and Ernest Wintgens (189 lbs.) for having
outstanding performances this weekend and coming home with 1st-place
medals!

North Coast Section 2A Team Dual Championships (02/12/05)
The
Mission San Jose Warriors had the honor of respresenting the MVAL in
the first ever North
Coast Section 2A Team Dual Championships, held at Albany High School on
Saturday. In the first round of action, the Warriors upset the
number-three seeded team, the Ygnacio Valley Warriors, to advance to
the semifinal round, where they ran into number-two seeded Granada High
School.
Exchanging a few forfeits with Ygnacio Valley,
Mission battled tough and needed the victory in the final contested
match of the dual to seal the victory over the YV Warriors,
35-33. The Warriors tried to ride the momentum onto the next
round, but the Granada Matadors proved to be a much deeper team, easily
handing the Warriors their only loss of the day. Because this was
a single elimination tournament, the Warriors had to settle for the
acknowledgment of being one of the top 4 dual teams in the North Coast
Section. Congratulations to the entire Warrior wrestling
team for putting in all the hard work to make this happen, and good
luck to all in the post season!
Complete results will be posted ASAP...

Mission
San Jose Invitational (02/04/05-02/05/05)
Once again,
the MSJ Invitational proved to be one of the toughest tournaments in
Northen California, showcasing some of the finest wrestlers in the
North Coast Section, along with representatives from the Central Coast
Section, Sac-Jaoquin Section and the San Francisco Section.
Although
Mission was only able to produce one medalist at this tournament (Eddie
Kang - 6th @ 103 lbs.), there were still several solid performances
throughout our lineup. E. Alex Kiehl (112 lbs.) finally got his
first true test of the season and produced a fine tournament with a 4-2
performance, including a huge 6-4 upset over Blake Nichols of College
Park, ranked 6th in the latest North Coast Section rankings. Alex
also recorded a technical fall and two major decisions during the
tournament. Michael Lin (119 lbs.) also managed to upset a ranked
opponent this weekend. In the first round, Michael drew the
number four seed, Ryan Stirm of Northgate, who is also ranked fourth in
the NCS rankings, and pulled out an 11-10 decision. Michael
finished the tournament with a 3-2 record, including a technical fall
and a major decision. Norell Paredes (125 lbs.) and David Grimm
(130 lbs.) also produced 2-2 records at the MSJ Invitational.

Newark
Memorial Dual (02/03/05)
In the last
dual meet of the season, the Warriors
received outstanding efforts from Michael Lin (119), Norell Paredes
(125), Chris Dzoan (135), Eric Bitzko (140) and Eddie Kang (103), but
it wasn't enough to put away the Newark Memorial Cougars Thursday
night. Lin, Paredes, and Kang all recorded 16-0 technical falls
against their respective opponents, Eric Bitzko came away with a third
round fall over Matt Young after an aggressive, back-and-forth match,
and Chris Dzoan scored a reversal late in the third round and pulled
out an exciting 4-3 decision over Chris Tolberson at 135 lbs.
Despite these great performances, Newark answered with four falls of
their own, along with a technical fall and received four forfeits on
top of that to come out with a 53-24 win over the host Warriors.
In arguably
the most exciting match of the evening,
Eric Bitzko and Matt Young battled it out for three tough rounds before
a winner was declared. Young started the scoring with a takedown
and two separate nearfalls before Bitzko escaped and scored on a
takedown and nearfall of his own. At the end of the first period,
the score was 8-6 in favor of Young. Young chose the top position
to start the second round. Bitzko was able to escape and score on
a takedown and two separate nearfalls to end the round leading
15-9. Choosing bottom to start the third, Bitzko managed to
escape, but was taken down and gave up two three-point nearfalls to
fall behind 16-17. But with time running out, Eric fought for the
escape to tie up the match, then took Young down straight to his back
and earned a fall with only 7 seconds left in the match.
The loss
for the Warriors dropped their record to
4-2 in league, good enough for a 3rd place finish in the Mission Valley
Athletic League.

Irvington
Dual (01/27/05)
Emotions
were pretty intense Thursday night as the Mission San Jose Warriors
hosted the Irvington Vikings in MVAL dual action. The dual was
highlighted with the way the Warriors were able to answer back every
time they found themselves in a hole. Halfway through the dual,
the Warriors were trailing the Vikings 12-27, before turning things
around with four major decisions and a technical fall to earn a 42-27
victory in front of the home crowd.
The dual
started at 145 lb., where Tommy Edwards earned a fall over Cody
McQuilliams in the second round. Mission answered back with two
straight pins from Kyle Mulhern and Eric Adams to take the lead at
12-6. Mission then had to forfeit the next three weight classes
and fell behind in the team scores 12-24. Freshman Daniel Stoops
wrestled an extemely competitive match at heavyweights, but
unfortunately came out on the losing end of an 8-6 overtime decision,
bringing the team score to 12-27 in favor of the visiting
Vikings. Coming back around to the 103 lb. weight class, the
Warriors won the next seven matches to wrap up the victory for the
Warriors. Eddie Kang major decisioned Storm Selsor 9-0 at 103
lbs., Alex Kiehl recorded a 17-0 technical fall over Chris Garcia at
112 lbs., and Brian Lam received a forfeit at 119 lbs. to tie the dual
at 27-27. Michael Lin bumped up to the 125 lb. weight class to
wrestle Sonny Sominguit and prevailed with a tough 4-0 decision.
Mission then wrapped things up with three consecutive major decisions
from David Grimm, Chris Dzoan and Eric Bitzko for the 42-27 dual
victory.
Earlier in
the evening, the junior varsity squad was led by Derek Wang (145),
Kevin Pan (152), Ricky McFerrin (103), Jason Hu (125) and Ryan
Blanchett (140), all earning wins by fall for the Warriors. These
efforts contributed to a 51-6 victory over the Vikings.

AdvoCare
Foothill Invitational (01/21/05-01/22/05)<>
The
Warriors spent the weekend up in Sacramento for the AdvoCare Foothill
Invitational held at the Memorial Auditorium. Leading the way
once again was Norell Paredes, wrestling at 125 pounds. In the
consolation
quarterfinals, Norell faced off against Tommy Wipfli of
Foothill-Pleasanton, the same wrestler who defeated Norell by a 5-3
decision the day before, dropping him into the consolation
bracket. But this time, the result was different, with Norell
using his quick and aggressive style to score three takedowns and a
three-point nearfall
on his way to avenging his loss with a 13-6 decision. Over the
two-day event, he compiled a 6-2 record and earned himself a
5th place medal at one of the toughest tournaments in Northern
California.
Other
outstanding performers from this tournament were: Michael Lin (3-2 @
119) and David Grimm (4-2 @ 130).

Washington Dual (01/19/05)
The
Warriors received five forfeits from the Huskies, and were led by the
efforts of Dan Stoops (HWT), Michael Lin (119), Norell Paredes (125),
and Eric Bitzko (140) to post a 49-19 victory Wednesday night.
The dual started off at 130 lb., where Ben Staszak was bumped up to
the varsity line-up. He gave an inspiring effort and was the aggressor
for the entire match, but unfortunately was taken down in overtime and
lost by the score of 6-4. Eric Bitzko then recorded a 14-1 major
decision over Matt Ocon at 140 pounds. Freshman heavyweight
Daniel
Stoops quickly took care of Tony DeFranco, recording a fall in
1:15. After forfeits to Eddie Kang (103) and Ricky McFerrin
(112), Michael Lin tallied six straight two-point nearfalls to earn a
16-0 technical fall at 119 pounds. Norell Paredes ended the night
with a 13-3 major decision over Jim Marshall at 125 pounds.
On the
junior varsity level, Jason Hu (125) and Derek Wang (145) both posted
falls to lead the Warriors to a 45-6 win.

Alhambra
Invitational (01/15/05)
The Warriors traveled up to Martinez to
wrestle in the Lawrence Miller Invitational, hosted by Alhambra High
School. We had two wrestlers advance to the finals of this
tournament, Eddie Kang (103) and Norell Paredes (125), and three more
earned medals: Michael Lin (3rd @ 119), David Grimm (6th @ 130) and
Chris Dzoan (4th @ 135).
Eddie Kang earned his way to the final with a major
decision and two falls before facing Daniel Malasavanh of Mt. Diablo
High School, eventually losing by way of technical fall, 17-2. In
the semifinals of the 125 lb. weight class, Norell Paredes met Elliott
Ripley of Amador Valley, an opponent he lost to 8-6 in the semifinals
of the San Ramon Invitational. He advanced to the finals this
weekend by avenging that loss, defeating Ripley by the score of
6-3.
At 119 lb., Michael Lin just missed advancing to
the finals, losing to Mike Lemus of Dublin High, the eventual champion
at this weight in the final
seconds of the match in the semifinals. He managed to bounce back
from that loss and claimed the 3rd place medal, defeating Karin of
Douglas High School 6-1. David Grimm managed to record two falls
and one technical fall, before losing in the 5th place match by the
score of 6-3. As a team, Mission San Jose racked up 95 points,
good enough for a 6th place finish.

James
Logan Dual (01/12/05)
The James
Logan Colts proved to be too much for Mission San Jose, as the visiting
Warriors lost their first MVAL dual of the season 48-18. Mission
trailed just 12-5 after the first four matches, including a first round
technical fall from Cody McQuilliams at 145 lbs., but Logan managed to
tally 33 straight points to jump ahead 45-5 with only four matches
left. Ricky McFerrin continued his impressive season with a pin
in overtime at 103 lbs. over Jeremiah Mahinay. Eddie Kang
defeated Josh Hyland, Michael Lin nearly pulled an upset over Jacob
Gire, and Norell Paredes recorded a major decision over Adrian Gomez to
end the dual meet.
Giving up
18 points due to forfeits, the junior varsity Warriors were narrowly
defeated 42-34. The Warriors were led by stellar efforts from
Alex Kiehl (119), Spencer Rigdon (135), Ryan Blanchet (145), and Kevin

San
Ramon Invitational (01/08/05)
Again
competing with only seven wrestlers, the Warriors narrowly missed
capturing the team trophy, but still managed a very respectable 3rd
place team finish at San Ramon Valley High School last weekend.
Eddie Kang led the way for the Warriors, who captured the gold medal in
the 103 lb. weight class with a 12-2 major decision over Josh Ho of
Hayward
High School, who was ranked 5th in the North Coast Section
rankings. David Grimm (130) narrowly missed becoming Mission's
second champion of the night, losing a tough 8-6 decision to Carlos
Martinez, also of Hayward High School. Overall, a great showing
by each of our wrestlers, and a nice tune-up before our showdown versus

American
Dual (12/15/04)
The
Warriors survived a bit of a scare in their home opener Wednesday night
as the varsity team prevailed with a 40-36 decision over the American
Eagles. The Warriors gave up four forfeits and fell behind 0-30
before recording our first victory of the night, when Eddie Kang won a
hard fought 5-4 decision over Aaron Roy at 112 lbs. Trailing
3-30, Alex Kiehl recorded a major decision at 119 lbs., followed by
a pin from Michael Lin (125), a 12-8 decision from David Grimm
(130), and back-to-back pins from Eric Bitzko (140) and Leo Mayfield
(145) to put the score at 34-36 heading into the final match of the
evening. Needing only a decision to win the dual, Kyle Mulhern
(160) pinned Jordan Mathias in 2:57 to wrap up the victory for the
Warriors.
Due to forfeits at the junior varsity level, only
three matches were contested. Nick Savio prevailed in a back and
forth match at 171 lbs., winning a 7-5 decision. Jason Hu (125)
and Ben Staszak (130) followed with first round pins to wrap up the
dual.

Duals (12/10/04 - 12/11/04)
With only
seven wrestlers competing in six weight classes, the Warriors put on an
amazing performance last weekend down at San Benito High School.
Having to forfeit seven and sometimes eight weight classes made it
impossible to come out victorious in the team scores, but the Warriors
made up for that with extremely tough and inspiring performances all
weekend long. Mission was led by Norell Paredes (125) who
wrestled his way to a 9-0 record (6 technical falls, 1 pin) and a spot
on the All-Tournament Team. His performance was highlighted by
the fact that he swept through the competition without being scored
upon, and outscoring his opponents by an amazing 109-0. All of
our kids wrestled extremely well all weekend and went home very
satisfied with their performance. Great job, guys!
