Newark Ironman Duals (12/5/03-12/06/03)
 

    The Warriors opened up the 2003-2004 season wrestling to a 3-3 finish on the weekend, and came home with the 6th place team trophy.  Individually, we had 5 placers, including 3 finalists.  Norell Paredes (125) placed 4th, Zack Thomsen (160) placed 3rd, Kyle Addison took 2nd at 171. Justin Monge was 2nd at 189. and Kurt Westendorf also took 2nd in the 215 lb. weight class.

Clovis West Shoot-Out (12/12/03-12/13/03)

    The Warriors traveled down to Fresno, CA to wrestle in "the toughest dual meet in the nation".  The tournament held true to its bidding as the Warriors suffered six straight losses on the weekend.  The team began action Friday against the then 5th-ranked team in the state, Calvary Chapel, losing 67-6.  The Warriors followed that performance with a dual against Turlock, then ranked 6th in the state.  The Warriors lost again, 55-15.
    The Warriors were led by Kurt Westendorf at 189 lbs., who went undefeated at 3-0, before sitting out the rest of the tournament with an knee injury.  Kyle Addison was also undefeated at 4-0 on the weekend in the 171 lb. weight class, including a fall and a major decision.

John F. Kennedy Dual (01/08/04)

    The Warriors opened up the MVAL season at home against the John F. Kennedy Titans.  The Titans did not field a junior varsity team, and forfeited six weights on the varsity level, as the Warriors prevailed by the score of 56-17.  Leading the way for the Warriors were Eddie Kang (103), and Zack Thomsen (160), both recording third round pins.

San Ramon Invitational (01/10/04)

    Coming back from winter break, our first tournament was up in Danville, at the San Ramon Invitational.  Leading the way for the Warriors was Norell Paredes, placing second.  Also placing for the Warriors were: Eddie Kang (6th @ 103), Michael Lin (6th @ 125), Zack Thomsen (5th @ 160), and Kurt Westendorf (3rd @ 189).  Overall, the team racked up 101-1/2 points with only 11 wrestlers and finished in 6th place.

Newark Memorial Dual (01/15/04)

    The Warriors entered Cougar Country and took on Newark Memorial in MVAL competetion.  In one of the most exciting matches of the night, Mike Gilroy (NM) held off a late surge by Mission's Zack Thomsen to win 7-5.  That match was also the first of the evening and really set the tone for the rest of the dual meet.  Just two matches later, Kurt Westendorf put Mission right back into it, pinning Justin Glorioso in just 1:03.
    The dual meet was tied at 28-28 going into the final two matches of the evening, but the Cougars pulled away with the victory, by the final score of 42-28.

College Park Frosh-Soph (01/17/04)

   The frosh-soph kids took a bus ride up to Pleasant Hill to compete in the College Park Frosh-Soph tournament.  The young Warriors wrestled well, placing 13 out of 18 kids, including 6 in the finals and 3 champions.  Great job, guys!

James Logan Dual (01/21/04)

    The Logan Colts were too much for the young Warriors to handle, as the varsity team lost by the score of 49-17.  Mission had to forfeit three weight classes and gave up 18 points right from the start.  In the 135-pound weight class, David Grimm stepped up from the junior varsity squad and recorded a major decision over Steven Forni, 12-3.  In one of the closest matches of the evening, Kenji Miyagi held off Mandeep Singh in the 145-pound weight class to win by the final score of 9-7.
    The story was more or less the same for the junior varsity squad, as they forfeited five weight classes and fell to the Colts by the final score of 53-10.

Advocare Foothill Invitational (01/23/04)

  Next up for the varsity squad was the Advocare (formerly sponsored by Asics) Foothill Wrestling Invitational at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, CA.  With a total of 73 teams entered, this tournament used a 64-man, double elimination bracket.
    Kenji Miyagi (145) and Kurt Westendorf (189) were the only wrestlers to advance to the second day of this tournament for Mission, both posting 3-2 records.  Also performing well for the Warriors were Norell Paredes (119) and Michael Lin (125), both going 2-2 in the tournament.

Irvington Dual (01/29/04)
 
    The Mission San Jose Warriors improved their record to 2-2 in MVAL action Thursday night with a win over the Irvington Vikings.  With Irvington only fielding a varsity team, Mission improved to a 2-2 record on the junior varsity level as well.  Mission earned forfeits in the 112 (Alex Kiehl), 140 (Cody McQuilliams), 160 (Zack Thomsen) and 171 lb. (Nick Savio) weight classes, and Irvington earned a forfeit in the 275 lb. weight class.
    In the most anticipated match-up of the evening, Tomas Becerra (IRV) and Kurt Westendorf (MSJ) squared off in the 189 lb. weight class.  Both wrestlers are currently ranked in the latest North Coast Section rankings.  In the end, Westendorf struggled to get things going and lost by the final score of 8-3.  Other Warriors recording wins for Mission were Eddie Kang, Norell Paredes, Michael Lin, Leo Mayfield, Kenji Miyagi, and Justin Monge.

California School for the Deaf Dual (02/05/04)

   Only seven total matches were contested Thursday night as the Mission San Jose Warriors defeated the California School for the Deaf Bears on both the junior varsity and varsity levels.
    Earning victories for the Warriors were Derek Wang (152), Kevin Pan (160), and Michael Lin (125).  The final team score for the JV team was 52-21, and for the varsity 66-18.

Mission San Jose Invitational (02/06/04)

    With four individual champions, Gilroy high school managed to close a 16-point gap in the finals to claim a share of the team championship at the Mission San Jose Invitational Saturday night.  For the Gilroy Mustangs, Nicolo Naranjo won the title at 103 lbs., John Gurich won the title at 112 lbs., Armando Gonzalez at 125 lbs., and Mark Zabala at 171 lbs.  Gonzalez and Zabala also won the Most Valuable Wrestler Awards for the lower and upper weights, respectively.
   For James Logan high school, James Abuan walked away as their lone champion at 152 lbs., claiming a 9-8 decision over Deer Valley's Ryan Sealey.  David Christian of San Ramon Valley high school won the Most Valuable Wrestler award for middle weights with an 18-3 technical fall over James Logan's Jonathon Ronny.

American Dual (02/10/04)

    The Mission San Jose Warriors wrestled their last MVAL home dual meet of the 2003-2004 season Tuesday night against the American Eagles.  The junior varsity cruised to a 54-15 victory with Kevin Pan, Jon Cornellius, and Mitchell Chancellor winning by fall.  The varsity team also had little trouble, with Alex Kiehl, Michael Lin, and Justin Monge leading the way, posting a 64-17 victory over the eagles.  In the most anticipated match-up of the evening, Kenji Miyagi defeated Alex Caraballo in the 145 lb. weight class by the score of 3-2.
    Tuesday night was also Senior Night for the Warriors, as Mission's four seniors: Kenji Miyagi (145), Zack Thomsen (160), Kurt Westendorf (189), and Justin Monge (215) were recognized for their four years of hard work and dedication to the wrestling program.

Washington Dual (02/12/04)

    The Warriors ended their MVAL league dual meet season in fashion, easily defeating the Washington Huskies, 49-17.  On the junior varsity level, Jon Cornellius (112) and Eric Adams (145) earned falls, and Frank Yu (119) posted a 15-1 major decision, as the Warriors defeated the Huskies 53-6.
    On the varsity level, Norell Paredes, Kenji Miyagi and Justin Monge all posted victories by fall to lead the Warriors to victory.  Perhaps the most impressive win of the night came in the 125 lb. weight class, where Michael Lin easily defeated Tony Wagoner, ranked 4th in NCS, by a 12-3 major decision.

MVAL Finals (02/21/04)

    The Mission San Jose Warriors capped off the 2003-2004 wrestling season at the MVAL Finals, hosted by James Logan High School.  The junior varsity finished by placing 9 wrestlers including Ian McElligott, the 103 lb. champion.
    The varsity Warriors successfully qualified all 12 wrestlers to the North Coast Section Championships, held next weekend at the Henry J. Kaiser Arena in Oakland.
