Sports - FAQs

What do I need to participate on a team?

In order to try out for any sports team at MSJ, you need to have had a physical examination within the last year, Physicals are only good for one year. Give a copy to the coach. The coach will also require you fill out an athletic emergency card. All others forms which you need to complete will be handed out during the first week of practice.

How are teams picked?

Each sport is different. Some sports can only carry a certain number of athletes on the team. Others keep everybody who comes out for the team. In those sports where teams are picked, coaches will discuss with everyone who wants to try out how this process works for that particular sport.

How long is practice, when are games and how long does each season last?

Most teams practice after school for two hours a day ( sometimes more, sometimes less). Some teams must practice at night from 5-7 due to sharing gym times with various levels of that sport. Games are normally played once or twice a week. Some teams also have competitions or games on Saturdays. Most seasons last three months.

What GPA must I maintain to be eligible?

All student athletes must maintain at least a 2.0. If an athlete has an F . or if his / her G.P.A is below 2.0 but above 1.75, he or she is on probation. That student athlete MUST then get a 2.0 and no F's during the next grading period. No student athlete may have two grading periods with an F.

How much does it cost to join a team?

NO student-athlete is forced to pay any fees to participate in any sport in the Fremont Unified School District. What we do ask for is donations to help offset the cost of running these programs. FUSD ask for a $50.00 donation to help pay for coaches: This donation is asked for each time a student athlete joins a team.

MSJ athletic department ask for a $35.00 donation to help pay for officials, referees, etc. and to help support it's teams and their budget needs. We also ask that you join our Boosters club which helps support our Athletic Department and the Visual and Performing Arts Programs.

How do I join a team?

Most coaches have sign up meetings a few weeks before the start of the season. Listen for announcements in the student bulletin or ask the athletic director for information about the sport your interested in. information about sign-ups may also be posted in various locations on campus.
