Abrego, Johnny (1981)
Johnny played football, basketball, and baseball for the Warriors. A highly sought after pitcher he was taken in the first round by the Philadelphia Phillies and played for a time in the majors with the Chicago Cubs. An arm injury cut his pro career short. He also coached MSJ Varsity Baseball.
Anderson, Brad (1972)
A great swimmer, Brad was a nine time MVAL champ as well as a six time NCS champ. He went to UCLA and was an American record holder.
Aura, Kellen (1975)
One of the finest wrestlers Mission has produced, Kellen was league champion three of is four years and finished second the other year. A first place NCS finish his junior year and a second place NCS finish his senior year as well as finishing second in the state as a senior, led to being named the MVAL wrestler of the year in 1975. Wrestling for San Jose State, raising four children and developing a successful lumber company in California and Oregon has kept Kellen active since graduating.¬¨ˆù

Christine (1990)
One of the most successful athletes MSJ has had, Christine lettered 11 out of 12 times. Varsity volleyball, basketball, softball, and soccer led to her being named MSJ Athlete of the year in 1990. A two¬¨ˆù time MVP in soccer and softball also led to being named All¬¨ˆù East Bay in softball.¬¨ˆù

Pam (1989)
Pam excelled in soccer. One of the top players in a long line of great soccer players, she was a four time All Leaguer and should be considered one of the best defenders in league.
Carnell,
Mike (1978)
Another great running back, Mike was a high school All American and scored over 30 touchdowns in his senior year. Highly recruited, Mike had his choice of schools on the west coast to attend and he eventually chose Cal. While still in high school he made Sports Illustrated "Faces in the Crowd" feature.
Chapman, Michelle (1985)
Michelle was a 12 time MVAL swim champ as well as a three time NCS champ.
Corrao, Kim (1994)
Kim had a great career at Mission competing in volleyball, soccer, and softball. She was a first team All Leaguer in all three and was the 1994 San Jose Mercury News soccer co-player of the year. Two NCS appearances in soccer and two NCS appearances in volleyball are among her credits. Kim moved on to the soccer powerhouse Santa Clara and played all four years with two NCAA Final Four appearances during that time. In her final year, she won the Santa Clara Women's Soccer Coach's award.
Edwards, Ryan (1994)
Ryan played varsity soccer for four years and also ran varsity cross country his senior year. Two time MVAL league champs ('93, '94) as well as 1993 NCS champs are his team achievements. Individually Ryan was MVAL and league scoring champ in 1994. A cross country league championship as well as an NCS championship began his senior year. After graduation Ryan played four years at the University of Washington as well as professionally for the San Jose Earthquakes.
Fisher, Scott (1981)
Three years of varsity track and two years of varsity basketball led to a slew of honors for Scott. A school pole vault record that stood for 20 years and the basketball player of the year in the south country were the highlights of his numerous honors. Scott walked on at University of California Santa Barbara and after finishing in their top five in scoring, rebounding, and field goal percentage, he walked off into the UCSB Hall of Fame. After playing in the professional basketball leagues of the USA, Scott found a permanent home in Australia where he won MVPs, championships and a spot on the Australian Olympic team in 1996. In 1998 Scott was voted one of the 10 best of all time in Australia and has since chosen to devote time to his business and golf game.
Gilbert,
Jason (1987)
Jason played four years of tennis where he was MVAL champ twice and an All Leaguer. He went on to play at Sonoma State and Cal State and is currently a teaching pro in Florida. In addition to tennis, Jason played soccer and football.
Hallahan, Shannon (1989)
Shannon was an outstanding athlete in basketball and volleyball. After a stellar high school career, she moved on to the University of Oklahoma and competed in the Big 8.¬¨ˆù
Hammerback, Karen (1990)
Karenˆîˆ½’݈’İs career was outstanding. In the 9th grade she was MVAL and NCS doubles champion. In 10th, 11th, and 12th grade she was the MVAL singles champion as well as NCS singles semifinalist. She was prep athlete of the week in the local papers every year as well as being named woman's tennis athlete of the year from her sophomore year on. Karen was consistently ranked as one of Northern Californiaˆîˆ½’݈’İs best female players under 18. After MSJ she played four years at Princeton University where, as a senior, she was one of the captains. In 1993 and '94 Princeton was the Ivy League champs. Karen was also an all Ivy League Scholar Athlete.
Hansen, Pete (1978)
Mission's first MVAL champion in tennis. Pete was also All League when he captured the singles title.
Hengel, Dave (1980)
Dave played two years of varsity football and three years of varsity baseball. He was All¬¨ˆù South County and All¬¨ˆù East Bay in baseball as well as All NCS, All¬¨ˆù California, and All American. Moving on to UC Berkeley, Dave starred for the Bears and ended up being MVP at the National Tournament in Omaha. After five years with the SeattleMariners, and a year with the Cleveland Indians, Dave spend 1990 and '91 with the Lotte Orians in Japan.
Hentschke, Adam (1979)
Adam wrestled and played football at MSJ earning four varsity letters in those sports in his junior and senior year. After being named MVP in football, he was a state wrestling finalist as a senior. He also finished third in the NCS that year. Married for 14 years and the father of three daughters, he currently is an educator.¬¨ˆù
Hoffman, Bryan (1994)
Bryan was an outstanding swimmer. He ended his career as an All¬¨ˆù American and was undefeated in MVAL competition. Three time MSJ school record holder, ten time NCS Finalist, and three time NCS winner helped earn him a scholarship to the University of Tennessee. While at Tennessee he was four year letter winner in swimming, twelve time All¬¨ˆù American and helped the Volunteers place 4th in Division 1.¬¨ˆù
Ingebretson, Danna (1989)
Danna was dominant in the racquet sports for all four years. All¬¨ˆù league in tennis as well as badminton. Her career highlight may have been in tennis where she was undefeated in the MVAL all four years. Currently living in La Jolla, Danna is training for a marathon in honor of her grandmother.
Johnson, Jimmie (1993)
Possibly the fastest athlete ever at MSJ, Jimmie had four years of varsity track, two years of varsity basketball and two years of varsity football. School records in the 400 and 200 as well as the sixth place CIF finish occurred in 1992. A Meet of Champions title and a couple of league titles are also to Jimmieˆîˆ½’݈’İs credit. At Stanford, Jimmie played football and ran track. In 1996 he finished second in the 400 meters, and the following year had a fourth place finish in the 100 meters and a championship in the 200 meters.
Kashyap, Manos (1981)
Manos was an MVAL champ in singles and doubles three of his four years. He was an All American in college at Cal State Hayward and also competed on the Professional Tour. He is currently working and living in Luxembourg.¬¨ˆù
Kirshner, Lev (1987)
Lev earned eight varsity letters at Mission, three years of badminton, one year cross country, and four years of varsity soccer. He won the MVAL and NCS in badminton, made All¬¨ˆù League three years in soccer, and was an all around player in soccer with over 50 goals scored in his high school career.¬¨ˆùLev received the Army's National Soccer Coaches Association of America MVP award after his junior year. He received a partial scholarship to Rutgers. He played soccer internationally for the U.S. and soon got into coaching. Stops at Canada, Ohlone, and Rutgers led to his current job as head men's coach at San Diego State.
Klinke, Linda (1990)
A four year competitor who excelled in soccer, Linda was All ˆîˆ½’݈’İLeague four years in the MVAL as well as being a top assist and goal scorer.
Krakoski, Jim (1982)
Jim lettered in eight varsity sports. Three years of varsity basketball and baseball and two more years of varsity football are to his credit. He is in the top ten career scoring for basketball at MSJ. All¬¨ˆù League in football, basketball, and baseball in his junior and senior years, Jim was named to the prestigious All Southern Alameda County team in basketball and baseball. After high school, Jim was a four year starter and defensive team captain at Washington State for the Pac10. Jim is currently living in Pleasanton with his wife, Julie, and six¬¨ˆù month old daughter, Kaitlin.
Krakoski, Joe (1981)
In his two years of varsity football and two years of varsity track, Joe was All¬¨ˆù East Bay and All- Northern California linebacker which led to four years at the University of Washington where he helped lead the Huskies to a Rose Bowl, two Aloha Bowls and an Orange Bowl berth. Drafted by the Houston Oilers in the sixth round, Joe had a year with the Washington Redskins in 1986.
Macur, Maryanne (1974)
One of the most decorated female athletes in MSJ history, Maryanne had three years of varsity tennis, four years of varsity basketball and four years of varsity softball. She was MVP in basketball three years and voted best all around athlete in 1972 and '73. Four years of collegiate basketball at Chico State concluded by Maryanne being named the Golden State Conference Athlete of the year in 1978.
Macur, Randy (1965)
Randy played varsity basketball and varsity tennis in Mission's first graduating class. He was MVP, a unanimous All Leaguer and legend has it he scored the first basket in MSJ basketball history. Before being named MSJ Athlete of the Year, he was captain of the team and at one point had made 27 consecutive free throws during a five game span. Randy averaged 14.7 points per game. Randy's son Mark also played basketball for the Warriors and daughter Amy took stats to help out.¬¨ˆù
Mapes, Carrie (1994)
Carrie was another in a long line of great Mission volleyball players. She extended her All¬¨ˆù League career at Mission by playing at San Diego State.
Marden, Jack (1979)
Jack was one of the most successful athletes and coaches in Mission history. As a competitor Jack was the school mile record holder at 4:13.6 and was a pivotal member of the 1978 and 1979 NCS championship teams. In coaching, Jack has guided Mission athletes to seven individual state championships and two National championships.¬¨ˆù
Marden, Jay (1981)
Eight varsity letters spread out in cross country and track, Jay still holds the school record in the 3200 (8:51) and also a 4:10 mile to his credit. Winning twelve NCS and Nor Cal individual championships in cross country and track, he also won the USA cross country championship in 1981 and was a first team All American in track and field. After High School Jay did run a 4:00 mile and also recorded one of the fastest 10K's ever for an American at 28:00. He ranked in the top 40 in the world for 10K and placed in the top 10 in 5000 meters in the USA track championship. UC Berkeley's two mile record holder is also Jay Marden.
Martin, Gary (1988)
Gary played four years of varsity soccer and three years of varsity baseball. A relentless, tough athlete Gary was an outstanding contributor to Mission Athletics and played an integral role in MSJ winning the NCS in baseball in 1986.
Martinez, Erin (1993)
Erin still holds the MVAL single season scoring record in soccer. She was also a four time MVAL All¬¨ˆù Star and a two time offensive MVP. After High School, Erin competed at national powerhouse Santa Clara and has played professionally in the Woman's Pro Soccer League.¬¨ˆù
McNevin, Dan (1977)
A cross country, soccer, and baseball star, it was in soccer that Danny excelled. Two varsity letters, two time all¬¨ˆù leaguer, and records for goals and assists led to a career at Stanford. At Stanford, Danny was a West Coast All¬¨ˆù American and Stanford's all time leading scorer from the midfield position. As a member of the Olympic Team player pool he was one of the top 22 players in the country. Dan also played professional soccer from 1980 to 1982 and semi¬¨ˆù pro for another 15 years.
McVein, Joe (1975)
Joe played varsity football and basketball. He was an All¬¨ˆù League linebacker and All¬¨ˆù League, All¬¨ˆù South Country in basketball. He is currently in the top 25 of career scorers in MSJ basketball history. Joe played on the 1984 and 1988 U.S. Olympic team handball squads as well as the '83 and '87 Pan¬¨ˆù Am games. For nine years he was a U.S. National Team member and played over 130 international games.
Montoya, Tom (1985)
Four varsity years of swimming led to records in the 500 free and 100 free for MSJ and the MVAL. Tom was undefeated in MVAL championship competition and was a 12 time first team. He swam four years at Brown University and has since come back to coach and run local swim organizations.
Nanney, Kevin (1991)
MSJ basketball All Time Leading Scorer, Kevin was one of the finest players ever to come out of the MVAL. Three years of varsity basketball was slowed down by an occasional injury including one when the Warriors were 16 - 4 and ranked 9th in the state. Highly recruited, Kevin earned a scholarship to Fresno State out of high school, transferred to West Valley Junior College where he made All State and then received another scholarship to prestigious Rice University where he won the scholar/athlete award every year he was there. Kevin currently works for Peoplesoft, and he and wife Kelly recently had a son Tyler.¬¨ˆù
Newman, Eric (1991)
Eric received three varsity letters in basketball and three in baseball where he was an All¬¨ˆù League in both. One of the premier scorers in the MVAL, Eric was an integral part of the 1991 basketball team. After playing at Texas Tech, Eric was taken in the fifth round by the San Diego Padres. Eric has played professionally for the Padres, Cubs, and is currently with the Diamondbacks.
Pennelly, Les (1969)
Les was a standout in football and wrestling. In 1969 he was All Northern California first team, Sunkist All American honorable mention and was named one of the top 16 back in the country. In 1968 he was the leading rusher in Northern California and the second leading rusher in 1969. Twice named All MVAL and All¬¨ˆù East Bay Les won the Helms Award (Scholar - Athlete) as back of the year.An integral part of MSJ's first undefeated team (9-0, 1969) and at the time he set records for career rushing yards (3100+); touchdowns (24), points (236); games rushing over 200 yards and yards in a single game (266). Les is married and has four children who are also making their way thru MSJ.¬¨ˆù
Peterson, Melisssa (1994)
Varsity softball, varsity basketball and varsity volleyball were all part of Melissa's accomplishments. In volleyball she had the most success. All four years she was first team All League and as a senior was All East Bay and the Argus Player of the Year. Also a Junior Olympic third team All¬¨ˆù American, she went to the University of Oklahoma, where she received numerous honors including Academic All Big 8, second team All Big 8, Team MVP and the all time record for digs in a career. Melissa currently coaches volleyball at MSJ.
Plummer, Gary (1978)
Gary personified determination and perseverance in his professional career. He walked on at Ohlone, Cal, and USFL's Oakland Invaders. Signed with the San Diego Chargers and later the San Francisco 49ers, he was a team leader of their Super Bowl Championship squad. Playing soccer and football at Mission, Gary was a key member of those winning teams also.¬¨ˆù
Riedy, Elissa (1994)
Another all¬¨ˆù time varsity letter winner, Elissa starred in cross country, basketball, and track. She was a two¬¨ˆù time 1600 m state champion, a four time MVAL and NCS champ in the 1600m and 800m and a four time MVAL and NCS champ in cross country. At Cal, Elissa was a two time track and field All¬¨ˆù American as well as a cross country All¬¨ˆù American. 1996 Junior National 1500m champ, Elissa ranked second in Cal's Hall Of Fame Top Ten list in the 800m and third in the 1500m.¬¨ˆù
Sakamoto, Doug (1985)
Doug played four years of varsity tennis and two years of varsity basketball. As a senior, Doug received the Aldo Anderson Scholarship in basketball for earning the highest GPA for the seniors on the basketball team. In tennis Doug had one league defeat in four years and was the MVAL singles champion in 1983 and 1985. His success led to a tennis scholarship to the University of Hawaii at Hilo where he finished as the tennis MVP in 1987.¬¨ˆù
Shew, John (1966)¬¨ˆù
John was an All ˆîˆ½’݈’İ Nor Cal running back and former MVAL wrestling champ. He went to Iowa on a scholarship after two years in football. After his senior year he was All League, All¬¨ˆù Country, All Central Coast, All Northern Coast, and was a starter in the inaugural Alameda County All Star game.
Spisak, Julianna (1987)
Surrounded by outstanding players, Julianna might have been the best of them. She was a four time All¬¨ˆù Star and set all the MVAl's early league records. She was MVP four times.¬¨ˆù
Smith, Tom (1976)
Tom was a league champ in cross country and track and was the fastest miler from MSJ. He ran a 3:54 mile and he also competed at the Olympic Trials.¬¨ˆù
Strangio, Liz (1980)
Four years of varsity cross country and track led Liz to school records in the two mile, mile, 880 mile relay, and distance medley. Liz was also a two time NCS champ in cross country. Liz moved on to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where she set a freshman record in the 10,000.
Swift, Rich (1970)
Rich was one of the finest athletes in a great era of Mission Athletics. In wrestling he was a four year letterman, and was team MVP twice and MVAL champ twice. In Northern California he finished second in 1969 and first in 1970. Rich was the first N.C.I. champ in MVAL history and the first N.C.I. champ in the area since 1959. Rich was 47-0 in his senior year and was named the East Bay Wrestler of the Year. The first Warrior Wrestler to have 100 wins, he finished 103 - 18 overall. In football more honors followed, as first team linebacker two years in a row, player of the week, and News Register MVAL Athlete of the Year in 1970. Perhaps the high point of Rich's career was that as a senior he did not suffer a loss individually or as a teammate. The football team (9-0) finished second in the East Bay, second in NorCal, sixth in the state, and was the tri city area's first undefeated team since 1937. The wrestling team (11-0-1) finished first in NCS. Currently coaching at Newark Memorial HS, Rich's teams have twice been MVAL football champs and five times Alameda County football Coach of the Year.
Takemoto, Yumi (1992)
Yumi played basketball, softball, and track, but she excelled in tennis. She won tennis titles in singles and doubles and was an All¬¨ˆù Leaguer as well as being a highly¬¨ˆù ranked tennis player during her high school years. Yumi finished her MVAL career 54 - 0 and was part of a dynasty that won 156 consecutive matches. She played intercollegiate tennis at UC San Diego. In 1993 and 1995 her teams were national finalists and in 1994 were National Champs. She is currently attending the physical therapy program at Merritt College after receiving her master's in kinesiology last June.¬¨ˆù
Trice, Mark (1988)
An unbelievable performer on the mat, Mark was 164 - 11, he won 19 tournaments, four MVAL titles, three time NCS finisher (third in 86, first in 87, and second in 88) and three time star finalist (third in 86, second in 87, first in 88). Mark was a two time state freestyle champ, and Greco¬¨ˆù Roman champ. He finished fifth in the Junior Nationals in 87 and third in 88.¬¨ˆù
Turner, Kevin (1976)
Kevin was a two time MVAL wrestling champ as well as a great football player. He ended up going to UOP to play football and then on to the NFL. He played for the Redskins, Giants, Browns, and Seahawks as well as two years in the USFL. Kevin is married and spends his time with his wife and four children as well as being Vice President of Investments for San Francisco firm.
Valentine, Dave (1983)
One of the all time basketball greats, Dave was a great scorer who played before the three point shot was instituted. One of only two players to score over 1000 career points, he finished with 1208 career points.
Wade, Teresa (1986)
Teresa was a ten time MVAL swimming champ. She was a four time NCS finalist as well as an All American.
Yamaguchi, Kristi (1989)
Kristi is one of the worldˆîˆ½’݈’İs most famous and successful athletes. Highlighting her numerous honors was winning the 1991 Women's Figure Skating Championship, and the following year being the Olympic and World Champion again. Kristi is currently in her 10th year touring with Stars On Ice and has also been honored by being named into the U.S. and World Hall of Fame.
Coaches:
Anderson, Aldo
Aldo was MSJ's second basketball coach, but ended first in wins and titles. After 15 years of coaching Aldo finished at 229 - 136 overall and had 6 first place finishers. His legacy lives on in the annual awarding of the Aldo Anderson Scholarship given to the senior basketball player with the highest overall G.P.A.
Carroll, Barbara
As MSJ girls soccer coach from 1984 -93 and again from 1996 -98, Barbara had an overall record of 150 wins, 51 losses, and 20 ties. Barbara had six MVAL league championships, three MVAL playoff championships, and nine Northern Coast Section appearances. Her teams were NCS finalists in 1991 -92 and 1992 - 93 as well as NCS semi¬¨ˆù finalists in 1986 -87 and 1988- 89. In addition to being the NCS honor coach in 1993, her teams were NCS Scholarship (3.0 GPA or better) every year.¬¨ˆù
Cooley, Arlene
One of the pioneer in women's sports, Arlene was the long time volleyball coach and physical education department chair at Mission San Jose.
Freitas, Morley
In nine years of boys varsity tennis, Morley won seven MVAL championships. In two stints on the girls side he led the Warriors to undefeated seasons of MVAL play for all eight years.¬¨ˆù
Ingebretson, Rob
Rob served Mission San Jose as varsity baseball coach from 1964 to 1982. Rob won four league titles in 1970, '75, '80, and '81.
Marden, Jack Sr.¬¨ˆù
Well known in running circles as the architect of the MSJ herd of runners, Jack also coached at Cal.
Oden, Walt
One of the most successful coaches in any sport, Walt coached the boys and girls swimmers during his years at MSJ. From 1966 - 1984 his boy's teams finished second twice, third once, and first all the other years. The girls were even more successful finishing second once and first all the other years.¬¨ˆù
Peterson, Joy
Mission's long time tennis coach was an outstanding leader on and off the court, and was one of the building blocks for girls sports to get off the ground.
Randall, Jim
A long time football legend, Jim's program was the De la Salle of the '70s. Jim won five MVAL titles in ten years in the decade of the '70s. He made three NCS appearances and won Mission's only NCS football title.¬¨ˆù
Ruiz, Mike
The highly successful wrestling coach won eight
titles in 11 years with the Warriors, including four in a row from 1972 -
