Staff input for Principal selection (notes from meeting held Feb 4, 2008)

Parent input for Principal selection (notes from meeting held Feb 6, 2008)

Timeline

  • Feb. 4 - FUSD Dir. of Certified Personnel met with MSJHS teachers and staff to discuss the selection process
  • Feb. 6 - FUSD Dir. of Certified Personnel met with parents to discuss the selection process
  • Friday, Feb. 22 - Final list of 12 questions (determined by parents and teachers/staff) to be submitted to district office
  • Friday, Feb. 29: Position posting closes
  • Monday, Mar. 3 - All applications to be reviewed
  • Friday, Mar. 14 - Interviews of 8 candidates will be held at the district office

Process overview

When the district was notified of Mr. Kew's plan to retire at the end of the school year, the process began to find his replacement. The intention is to treat this as an "open position" and have someone hired before school lets out for the summer so that next year's principal will be the permanent, not interim, principal.

The district procedures for the selection of a School Principal can be found at http://www.fremont.k12.ca.us/humanresources/ProcedureforPrincipalSelection.pdf

Parents that attended the meeting held on February 6 were asked to come up with a list of qualities that we would like to see in the principal candidates. They included Leadership Attributes, Specific Skills and Personal Characteristics. The qualities were discussed and input delivered to Bev Chernoff, Dir. of Certified Personnel, that night.

Timeline

Additionally, the parents were asked to select three parents who would participate in the interview process on March 14. The parents voted on the three parent representatives, plus one alternate.

The parents were also asked to come up with a list of twelve interview questions that they would like to have asked of the principal candidates during the interview process. We are now soliciting feedback from as many parents as possible to help us come up with the best list of questions. The meeting to discuss these questions and select the final twelve will be held on Monday, Feb. 18 at 7:00 pm at Mission Coffee on Washington Blvd. All interested parents are urged to attend. If you have ideas for questions to be asked of candidates, please submit them to our Parent Contact, Marilyn Williams, fivewilliams@comcast.net.

Once the parents have finalized their list of twelve questions, the parent liaison will meet with the teacher representative to combine questions and come up with the final list of twelve questions to be asked of all candidates. The final list of twelve questions will be submitted to the district office on Feb. 22..

As mentioned in the district procedure document, the interview committee will consist of three certificated staff, one classified staff member, three parents selected by parent groups, and two administrative/community members.  The committee will screen the eight candidates to three, and present them to the Superintendent in unranked order. The final candidates will be interviewed by the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, the Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services, and several school board members. The Superintendent will make the final decision and share the name of the successful candidate with the Board.
