March, 2012 Dear Parents/Guardians: I want to welcome the new students and their families to the Robertson High School program. As we go into the third and final trimester of the year, it is important to keep in mind that attendance and class participation are the key ingredients to a successful experience on the Robertson site. I want to acknowledge and congratulate the 109 s
tudents that have become members of our Principal’s List and Gold/Silver Club; your hard work and commitment has contributed greatly to your success. As most of you know, we had our accreditation visit from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The process was embraced and the visiting team was impressed with the program that Robertson High School provides its student body. I want to thank the parents that attended the Sunday meet and greet on March 4th. Your participation and support is appreciated. Credit recovery classes are available for students to complete courses that weren’t completed last trimester. This is a great opportunity for students to finish more than 30 credits during each trimester. Students can also earn more credits from other programs like adult school, community college, ROP, and work experience. Please contact your student’s counselor for more information. During the first week of May, our students will begin taking the state-mandated STAR test. The testing will be given over four days and students will do their best if they are rested, take this seriously, and are on time for class. Last year, we increased our API score by 28 points and this year we are challenging the students to meet or increase last year’s growth. Please encourage your student to meet these goals and please make sure they have breakfast before the test. Maintaining a safe, orderly and positive learning environment for our students is, as always, a very high priority. Thirty-eight (38) students made the Gold club and ten (10) made the Silver. Remember parents, every student can qualify with good attendance, behavior, and achievement.
VOLUNTARY PARENT DONATIONS As most of you are aware, the student activity and rewards programs are solely supported by parent and community donations. To continue offering reward incentives to our students, we must rely on parent and community donations. Your contributions enable us to reward student achievement, (pizza parties, prizes, etc.) athletic programs (volleyball, basketball and softball), subsidize our school-wide Spring prom, and pay for the school-wide barbecue in June. If you are able to make a voluntary tax deductible donation, we will be able to continue providing quality activities and rewards for student achievement, good attendance, etc. You can also register your Safeway or Lucky’s card so that Robertson or Vista will receive a rebate from your grocery purchases. To do this, call Mrs. Wong at 657-9155 x 49103. On behalf of our students, thank you for whatever help you can provide.
*** EAP Testing Early Assessment Program (EAP) testing is coming soon. This is a test for 11th graders only to determine if their writing skills are college-ready. All of our 11th graders (by credits) will be taking this exam some time between March 6 - March 30. *** WOW VAN Health Care Services for children and Adults – Health check ups, immunizations, Health Education. To schedule an appointment, call 656-4206 or 608-3203. Walk-ins accepted. Most services are provided for free or for a reduced fee for the uninsured. The WOW Mobile Health Clinic provides services regardless of immigration status or ability to pay. Funding is provided by Washington Hospital Healthcare System, grants and private donations. The WOW van will be at Robertson on Mondays, May 14 and June 11. There will be no visit in April due to Spring Break. * * * Counselor’s Corner HELPING YOUR STUDENT BE SUCCESSFUL! 1. Your child’s teacher should be your first contact for information about their class. You’ve heard one side of the story from your child of what’s going on in class. Now it’s time to talk to the teacher and hear the other side and formulate a plan for your child’s success with all concerned (parent, teacher, child) participating. 2. Teachers may be reached by email or voicemail. PLEASE understand that they may not be able to return your call the day it is received but they will return it as soon as they can or get in touch with you by email or note. 3. Most all teachers offer extra help to their students either during lunch or before or after school. Find out during conferences when that’s available and how to take advantage of it in case your child may need it now or at a later date. 4. Encourage your child to read daily. Read and discuss the newspaper, school text book, recipes, a novel…just read! There are many studies that show a correlation between the amounts of reading a student does and their success in school. Reading helps with all subject areas. 5. Call your student’s counselor and make an appointment with him/her. 6. Make sure Ms. Redmon has your cell phone number and ask her to make it your primary number for staff to call. If you have an email address and that is an easier method to reach you please send it in to Ms. Redmond or your student’s counselor. CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL PROFICIENCY EXAM (CHSPE): The CHSPE is a test of English and Math that if passed, serves as a legal equivalent of a High School Diploma. A student must be 16 years old to take this exam. For more information, you can visit the site, www.chspe.net, or contact student’s counselor.
G.E.D. INFORMATION: For students who are interested in getting information on getting a diploma by examination through the GED program, please see your counselor. In general, the GED exam is given to students who are within 60 days of their 18th birthday and deficient in credits. Students
who wish to do this MUST get an application to become a full-time adult school student from their counselor. Once this application is approved by the district and adult school the student and his/her family will be contacted to make an appointment at adult school to complete the process of enrolling for GED preparation classes. SELECTIVE SERVICE REGISTRATION – According to Federal Law, all men must register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. You must register with Selective Service to stay eligible for financial aid, student loans, government jobs, job training and obtaining or renewing a driver’s license in most states. Registration is easy and takes only a matter of minutes. Go on-line at WWW.SSS.GOV or visit the local Post Office and ask for a registration card. * * * Financial Assistance If you need assistance paying for student meals, fill out an eligibility application. Only one Free and Reduced Price Meal application per family is required. Applications are available at your child’s school, the Fremont Unified School District Nutrition Services Department at 4210 Technology Drive, or on the district website, www.fremont.k12.ca.us under Departments - Nutrition Services. Be sure to include all information requested so that the results of your application will not be delayed. Applications are accepted at all schools and at the District Office. Career Center News Attention Seniors: · Ohlone placement testing is scheduled for April 2nd in the Library. · If you are planning to attend Chabot in the Fall, please apply online as soon as possible. Make sure to take the placement test and meet with a Chabot counselor in April. Sophomores and Juniors: If you are planning to take an ROP class next year, you need to pre-register with Mrs. Creek in the Library/Career Center as soon as possible. Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASBAB), a multi-aptitude test battery, will be administered on Thursday, April 19th at 9 a.m. in the library. Students who are interested, see Mrs. Creek in the Library / Career Center. Program Improvement Update for School Newsletters: At the beginning of this school year Fremont Unified was notified that we are a program improvement district. We were identified because we did not meet the Federal guidelines for student proficiency for four subgroups of students. We remain a high performing district based on our API score of 877. Our graduation rate is above the state requirement for school districts, and we continue to received distinguished school honors for multiple schools each year, But not all students are achieving at this high level and we are required to look at our data to make changes so all students achieve proficiency. When we received the official notification of Program Improvement we immediately notified all parents. We also began the process of discovering what we need to do differently for our struggling students. There are four tools or surveys we used to look at our programs. From these surveys and other data we are looking at making some changes. As a district we are committed to providing appropriate interventions for students requiring more instruction to master the standards. We will provide professional development for all teachers to support classroom instruction. We will make sure all students are provided with the necessary instruction to learn the standards for their grade level. As parents we want your help also. We have committees and events that we use to get feedback from and work in partnership with parents to help their child and all children do better in school. Some of these committees and events are: School Site Council, English Language Advisory Council, District English Language Advisory Council, Title I Parent nights, Migrant Education Parent nights, Parent Representative Advisory Assembly, Special Education Community Advisory Committee, Instructional Equity Advisory Commission, Literacy Nights and GATE advisory meetings. We need all parents to get involved in the events at your child’s school or at the district office. Please work with us to assure high quality learning for all students in Fremont.
