MSJ offers a number of clubs and organizations you can join - have fun, learn, give back to the community. It"s all here! Below is a list of the clubs and organizations in each area.

A La Mode

A La Mode is a club in which students interested in fashion - whether it's sewing, sketching, drawing, shopping, modeling, cosmetics, or just clothes in general - can come and share their ideas with other people equally fascinated by this broad genre of art. Our club is linked to FIDM's (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise) international club network, so we'd be able to provide information and resources regarding the fashion industry to anyone passionately committed to pursuing fashion as a major/career. However, members don't have to want to be fashion designers to join! We welcome all students to come and see how our many events can use "fashion" to help the community and contribute to the many causes in the community. We meet in E7 every other Thursday in Mrs. Montano's room. Come check us out and deviate from the academically based clubs or clubs with serious formal causes. We'll show you to have fun FASHIONABLY.

 

Academic Challenge

Affectionately dubbed Academically Challenged by its members, Academic Challenge is a club that organizes students to participate in various science and jeopardy-styled contests against other schools. We encourage the study of science, math, literature, and humanities through competition, so this club is made up of bookworms, engineers, and trivia lovers, in addition to the nerds of MSJ.

 

American Cancer Society

FIGHT for the cure! The American Cancer Society club plans and holds events to raise money for cancer awareness and research. We host an annual breast cancer week and we actively participate in Relay for Life and other cancer walks. We offer many volunteer opportunities such as working in the Discovery Shop; so, come and support the cause!

 

American Red Cross

The American Red Cross club assists the school and the American Red Cross in instituting, encouraging, unifying, and executing projects and services in cooperation with the Bay Area Chapter, which include fundraising for disaster relief, assistance in local blood drives, as well as teaching and informing members of the community basic first aid and CPR. Participating in American Red Cross' events and fundraisers  is a great way to earn service learning hours.

 

Asian Outreach

Asian Outreach is a club designed to educate students about the Asian culture. This helps students better identify themselves with their native backgrounds and also aids in the progression towards unification of students of different cultural backdrops.

Bhangra Club

Bhangra is the North Indian folk dance that originated in Punjab. Bhangra is the style of dance, not music, that was created during the harvest and performed during various festivals. Nowadays, Bhangra is easily recognized by the upbeat tempos and loud beats of the drums. The Bhnagra Club hopes to bring a little taste of ancient Indian tradition to the culturally diverse students here at MSJ.

 

Bollywood Club

Club Bollywood is club that gives students and teachers an ability to appreciate the Mumbai movie industry, Bollywood. Bollywood movies are basically musicals, as a significant amount of each movie consists of various song/dance sequences. The movies are mainly in Hindi with some English intermixed. Although their will be English subtitles when the club watches movies.  To help appreciate the musical aspect of Bollywood movies our club will teach the songs in these movies. The songs will be taught in both European musical notation and the Sargam Indian musical notation. We will form a Bollywood Club band that will hopefully perform formulticultural week and other events. The club will also host some Karom ( an Indian board game similar to pool) tournaments throughout the year. Also, at every weekly meeting there is Indian snack food and Indian drinks like Thumbs Up, Fanta, etc. for club members that pay their membership fees.  The main event of the year for the club is a Bollywood themed dance where Bollywood music will be played and Indian food provided. All are welcome to join, so come and check it out! We meet every Friday during lunch in M1.

Chinese Chess Club

Just how Western chess has swept across the nation and won fans all over.  Chinese Chess is wildly gaining popularity.  The game, which can be learned by individuals of all nationalities, is one that requires thought, patience, and a bluffing composure.  The Chinese Chess Club promotes this skilled game by teaching students vital strategies.  In addition to all the awesome fun of the game, members also become familiar with Chinese culture as it relates to them, and as it relates to Asian American society in general.

 

Club Astro

Club Astro is MSJ's space/astronomy club.  This means that we are concerned with all aspects of this topic: from constellations to space teloscopes to astrology and even life on other planets.  Our activities also reflect this idea by hosting events from lectures and stargazing to movie debunking sessions, among other activities.  Many of the students who go the Mission know about our annual Dr. Ricks presentation to aid eighth graders in how to set up and present a project.  This is just one opportunity for members to become involved in the organization.  No experience in space-related topics is necessary to join this club, only an interest in any aspect of the cosmos.

Colorguard

Interested in whirling flags and guns in coordination with music? MSJ Colorguard does just that, and having won many honors across the state, has become one of the most intriguing aspects of our school. Tryouts for the Colorguard team are at the end of the school year.

COR Dance Club is a place where any who loves the art of dance can hang out and have fun learning combinations. Our meetings focus on hip hop, jazz, and Tahitian dance styles. All are welcome, with or without experience.

Cycling Club

Mission San Jose's cycling club welcomes both roadies and mountain bikers of all experience levels. We organize many rides throughout the year, and plan to end the year with a club banquet and a highly enjoyable ride in San Francisco. DECA

DECA is MSJ's one and only competitive club for marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality and marketing sales and services. We compete in numerous conferences throughout the year and host a variety of club events ranging from fundraisers to entrepreneurship simulations (stocks, virtual business challenge, etc.), in addition to finding various sponsors and internships throughout the South Bay. DECA helps students develop skills for successful business careers, build self-esteem, experience leadership and practice community service. En Garde: Fencing Club

En Garde! MSJ's Fencing club is where MSJ's students come to learn and practice fencing technique and discuss strategy. We welcome both veteran fencers and people who are simply interested in learning (or learning more about) the sport. Our club has both the experience and equipment, so we start off new students by teaching basic actions and technique, and --- later, of course --- some more exciting moves. For the experienced fencers: we have equipment and space for foil, so please drop in during meetings to fence a bout, or help with lessons!

En Passant

En Passant is MSJ's champion chess club. Members help one another improve their chess by playing blitz (quick) games. People also help one another by looking over their games. One of the club's main goals is to place at least top 3 in the California State Scholastic Championship. En Passant holds mock tournaments where MSJ students can compete to see who is top at MSJ. The best chess club in Fremont, En Passant provides a friendly enviornment for masters and novices alike.

Explosure Art Club allows students to express their artistic skills. The club provides for students a place for a creative flow, new ideas, and free expression.

Focus Access Films

Ever wished you could make your own movie? Now you can. Focus Access Films is a club for the art of filmmaking. whether you plan to film your little sister's birthday party or create your own cinema masterpiece, this is the club for you. If you're a beginner, we will introduce you to the fun of creating your own videos, and if you've got some experience, we will help you use it creatively.

French Club

Bonjour! French culture has made its own niche at MSJ in the form of the French Club. The goal of this club is to allow its members to experience and explore French culture through a wide range of activities, which include Mardi Gras luncheons, dramatic productions, French games, movies, and best of all, chocolate-dipped delicacies! And remember, there is no need to know or be taking French to participate in this club and celebrate French culture, but for those who are taking French, it is a great opportunity to meet other fellow French-speakers!

Future Tech Programmers

Our Club is involved in programming and web design over the computer, We essentially meet once a week to discuss and create new programs for graphing calculators, games, and basic computer programs (e.g. Java, C++). Our goal is to provide new students with the basics of programming so that they can make their own programs and have a fun time doing it. From gaming to computer savvy this is the best way to get to learn about the latest and upcoming technology around the world.
           
Gay Straight Alliance

The goal of MSJ's Gay Straight Alliance is promote awareness among MSJ students and staff about issues concerning the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning) community. The club also serves as a safe haven for victims of harassment. Come to our meetings to learn about and discuss issues and events concerning the LGBTQ community and to find out what you can do to help.

Go Club at MSJ

Go is a unique game of strategy that originated thousands of years ago in China, when the Emperor and the nobles played the game in their free time to sharpen their minds. Today, it is widely played across China, Korea, Japan, and the western world. The goal of the Go Club at MSJ is to introduce and teach students the strategies for victory, and to inspire appreciation for the beauty and simplicity of go. We participate in numerous tournaments throughout the school year, and consistently rank as the best high school team in the Bay Area. We're always happy to welcome new members into our club. Gravel Pit

What does it mean to be a bboy? Bboying is commonly referred by most people as "breakdancing". However bboying is actually a type of dance that evolved around the time hiphop was created. It combines the athleticism and flexibility of the human body with the precision of dancing with the beat. Our club is open to all students, boys or girls, that would like to learn the basics or master their own bboy style. Take place in our competitions and win prizes or just come to learn and have fun. No experience is required or neccesary. There is also no fee. All we need is your body and soul. Become a part of the world wide spread of hiphop culture.

Green Club

Green Club is dedicated to helping the environment. The main goal of this club is to make the world a greener place by changing one community at a time. Various activities of Green Club involve cleaning up at Tule Ponds, raising money to adopt a rain forest, composting and gardening, and meeting with various schools to plan events that promote environmental awareness amongst children, teens, and adults alike.

Impromptu

Impromptu is a music club designed to promote music in the community.
We welcome musicians of all skill levels and of all instruments. Through public performances, members can become more active in the community and are given the opportunity to play or sing their own compositions and those of their favorite composers within small ensembles. ISACA, the Indo-South Asian Cultural Awareness club, is a culturally centered group of people that work together to promote South Asian culture at MSJHS. Through many activities such as barbeque socials, community service projects and our annual culture show, our members have been able to expose their culture to the rest of the school.

Konnichiwa! Japanese Club is intended to enrich the minds of the student body with Japanese culture. Club activities include eating Japanese food, listening to J-pop, learning how to fold origami, and taking excursions to SF Japan town. No Japanese language experience is required to participate, so come join the fun!

JCK POP Culture allows students to learn about Japanese, Chinese and Korean culture through the exploration of their popular culture.

NEWS FLASH! The official paper of MSJHS, the Smoke Signal, is always ready to update the student body on issues such as hacking, political issues, stealing, world news, cheating and school sports. The newspaper staff works sedulously so that every month there is a new issue for students to read, completely free of charge. Next year's juniors and seniors interested in joining the staff can pick up applications near the end of the year.

Junior State of America

Mission San Jose's JSA chapter is for students who are interested in politics and government, foreign affairs, the law, and education. JSA allows for an exchange of ideas through stimulating student debates, thought talks, problem solving, and a variety of simulations. Throughout the year there will be several conventions where chapters from various other schools in Northern California meet to debate and discuss pressing political and social issues. Join JSA and meet people who are interested in politics and the future!

Just Desserts

Nothing can replace a full year course in Culinary Arts but we'll certainly try to offer a fun and relaxing substitute here at Just Desserts! As the name suggests, we focus our activities around the baking and pastry arts of the culinary world, starting with basic recipes, progressing towards slightly more complex ones later in the year. Using a demonstration-then-DIY approach, you'll learn how to create your own confectioneries to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Key Club

Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students, existing in almost 5,000 high school campuses around the world! We are a high school branch of the humanitarian organization Kiwanis International, which is why KEY stands for Kiwanis Educated Youth. The club provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character, and develop leadership. We serve the community in many ways including these: serving food every month at the Homeless Shelter, holding a Canned Food Drive in November, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF in October, Christmas Caroling in December, holding various drives to raise money for the less fortunate with our annual Charity Badminton tournament in March, helping to host Ducks for Bucks in April, Relay for Life in June and other activities that are fun and build leadership.

Korean Club

The club will bring cultural awareness for non-Koreans as well as Korean. We will teach some of the Korean language, will create an environment to make new friends easily who finds an interest in a same topic, catch up on Korea's current news along with Korean entertainment, and organize fundraisers, guest speakers and cultural events.

Lacrosse

MSJ Lacrosse club has the sole purpose of getting kids to learn about lacrosse. While predominately an east coast sport, it is now the most rapidly growing sport. Learn how to handle the lacrosse stick, as well as pick up some cool tricks like scooping and passing. If you've ever wanted to check out what lacrosse is all about (just like the NCAA tournaments :D), then please come and check out our club!

Leadership II

Leadership II is the special student task force that plans student activities year round. Members of Leadership II serve on committees such as Campus Beautification, Tech Outreach, Student-Teacher Relations, Activities Team, Community/CFS, Elections, Homecoming/Multicultural, Slide Shows, Publicity, Ambassadors, and Family Festival. Applications are filled out in the spring and members are selected by their willingness and dedication to serve the school.

LEO Club

One of the largest service clubs on campus, LEO Club is an international volunteering organization that provides the student body with opportunities to serve and make a difference in their own communities. The club participates in a wide range of events every year, among them the annual AIDS Walk, Trick or Treat on Safety Street, Kids N' Kites Festival, and more. As the high school chapter of Lions International, LEO (Leadership, Experience, Opportunity) also promotes service projects abroad, and MSJ LEOs have been especially active in supporting Daraja Academy in Kenya, the first free all-girls secondary school in East Africa. If you're interested in serving your community, meeting new people, developing leadership skills, and fulfilling your service hours (and really, who doesn't?), come join LEO Club!

Literarily For You

Hey all you bookworms!  Literarily For You is the club for you!  LFY discusses novels in detail with symbolism, themes, and philosophy in mind, helping to improve analytical skills among Mission San Jose students.  This book club also organizes book sales, with all proceeds going to the nonprofit, and book drives, where students can donate old books to be read and enjoyed by the less fortunate.

Martial Arts Club

The purpose of the martial arts club is to instruct both newcomers and veterans of martial arts in new and diverse martial art forms. The club provides a place to practice, learn and share different styles of martial arts with other MSJ students in a safe and fun environment. The club not only instructs self-defense techniques, but also showcases the talents of martial artists at MSJ through performances during the span of the year. MEDCORPS

MEDCORPS is a student organized health service club, dedicated to combat AIDS, Diabetes and Alzheimers in the United States. We volunteer at several notable volunteer events, hosted by nationally recognized organizations, and we arrange several fundraisers throughout the year to donate to both aid and research organizations around the country. We offer legitimate community service opportunities through our activities, and we donate a sizable percentage of our annual revenue to local aid organizations as well. As a service club eager to forward its legacy, we also offer various summer internship and volunteer programs which are sponsored by state universities and national organizations. We hope to benefit the hundreds and thousands suffering from AIDS, Diabetes and Alzheimers in America, and we are eager to expose our high school youth to the programs we advocate.

The purpose of the Mission Anime Club is to immerse our members into the exciting Japanese subculture that has been a major influence on America in the later half of the 20th Century as well as today. Mission: SOS is a Mission San Jose High School organization with a goal of promoting a more fulfilling high school experience. Through researching potential block scheduling, improving student-teacher communication, and creating events where speakers help students handle stress, we work together as a team of students, parents, faculty, and administrators to try and make Mission less  stressful and more engaging. Examples of past SOS successes are a school-wide survey to determine major causes of stress for both students and faculty and individual workshops and events at school. Mission statement: "To support a school environment that nurtures integrity, academic engagement, connectedness, and well-being.

Model United Nations is an organization for those interested in international relations, diplomacy, and human rights issues. It serves as a focal point for preparation and attendance at mock conferences and other associated activities.

MSJ Amnesty

Amnesty International is a global organization that fights for the preservation of human rights around the world. It boasts 2.2 million members from over 150 countries; all dedicated to stopping human rights abuses going on today. MSJ Amnesty International works with our parent organizatioin, Amnesty International to raise local awareness about human rights violations and what we can do to end them. We petition governments abusing human rights, send letters, host awareness-raising events and otherwise work to preserve basic human rights. BECOME AN UPSTANDER TODAY!

MSJ Biomedical Club
The Pre-Med club will provide students with opportunities to learn more about health-related careers, educate them about basic emergency procedures, and coordinate social and meaningful activities otherwise unavailable to them. Our objective is to educate the student body about the medical field and what it has to offer, regardless of major.

MSJ Cricket Club

Cricket is a sport that was created in England and now played by many countries around the world. Although the sport is not as popular in America, it's basic gameplay is somewhat like baseball. The Cricket Club's main goal is to teach its members more about cricket, and help make them better players. We play matches within our club and also try to play competitive yet friendly matches against other schools.

MSJ Kendo Club

Kendo: If you've seen it, you know how awesome it is. If you haven't, then I suggest you youtube it today! A derivative of Japanese swordsmanship developed in the early 18th century, Kendo allows those interested to keep their bodies intact while maintaining the spirit of swordsmanship in the development of martial prowess. If you want to learn or practice Kendo, come by one of our meetings and sign up!

MSJ Recreational Tennis Club

MSJREC is a newly added recreational tennis club for everyone!  This is a social club that stresses the importance of interest over skills; meaning that one's skill level should not be an obstacle to enjoy the fun of the sport. MSJ Web Design provides a forum for students interested in making websites. We discuss graphics, coding, and everything in between! Come share your coding tricks and layout solutions; participate in our diverse contests; and help manage our websites! The Muslim Student Association strives to offer cultural and religious diversity to MSJ's campus by holding events that relate to and represent Islam. Students from all religious beliefs are welcome. The MSA holds weekly meetings and Fridays prayers. It also host events like movie nights, socials, and Fast-a-thons.

Odyssey of the Mind

The Odyssey of the Mind Club is designed to introduce and engage students in this wonderful program. By forming teams to solve one of six problems, ranging from building mechanical devices to reinterpreting literary classics, students will be able to utilize and strengthen their creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork skills in competition with other schools. The Paper Business Club, also as known as the Origami Club, is a place where students can learn the fun and unique art of origami.  We offer help for a variety of models, ranging from simple to complex.  No experience is required, so come and learn how entertaining and rewarding origami can be.

Peer Counseling is a seventh period class that helps the student body through positive reinforcement and peer-to-peer relations and mentoring. They train members in order for them to help their peers with their problems. Peer counseling helps guide their peers to lead healthier and more responsible lives.

Perfect Noise is a club for anyone who is interested in learning how to beatbox, teach others how to beatbox, or just likes being wowed by watching someone make the sounds of a drum machine, bass guitar, and sing all simultaneously! Phoenix

Do you enjoy expressing yourself in artistic and exciting ways? Then Phoenix is the club for you. The Phoenix club collects art, photography, poetry, and prose submissions from MSJ students throughout the year, and then creates and sells a magazine containing the best submissions at the end of the school year. And for those who like taking part in magazine production and publication, the Phoenix club is just the place to show off your organization and artistic skills!

Picture That Photography

Are you interested in photography? Do you want to learn how to use a dSLR? Come to Picture That meetings on Thursdays in E7 to learn about the art of photography. We hold weekly lessons on the basics of a dSLR camera and the compositions of a well-taken, artistic photo. No camera experience is required, but if you have your own camera, feel free to bring it to our meetings. If you don't have a camera, however, the club is willing to lend out cameras for your artistic development. We plan to hold field trips to various sites such as Sunol, San Francisco and Lake Elizabeth to gain experience with different environments and lighting. Picture That also creates the Multicultural slideshow that will be shown to the entire school at the Multicultural week assembly.

Speech and Debate Club Info

The Mission San Jose Speech and Debate Club (MSJSD) is dedicated to providing its participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to compete in Speech and Debate tournaments across the state. Members have the option of joining Lincoln Douglas Debate, Policy Debate, and Speech. If you have a love for public speaking, researching, writing, acting, or critical thinking please join us for our next club meeting, and discover which of our many events is right for you. With tournaments at schools like Stanford, Berkeley, and Santa Clara, and over ten events to choose from, theres something for everyone!

Spirit Leaders

Cheering, dancing, performing and competing! MSJ Spirit Leaders work eleven months out of the year preparing for the football season, basketball season and many competitions throughout the state of California. Come to the games and help the MSJ Cheerleaders and Song Girls cheer our teams to victory.

Stand

Stand is the student-led branch of the Genocide Intervention Network. Our mission is to arm our fellow students with the tools to combat genocide. Our chapter also promotes being an upstander and doing the right thing.

Tech and Robotics Club   
Mrs. Neilson & Mr. Brucker Rooms B3/P9   
The MSJ Tech and Robotics Club welcomes students who are interested in expanding their knowledge in computers, robotics, and programming. Various opportunities are available to active members including awards and scholarships. We are the home of MSJ's FIRST Robotics Team and we participate in various other competitions including FIRST Tech Challenge and Botball. Veterans mentor new teams, so no experience is required to take part in the tournaments. We hope to see you at our next meeting!

Three Cubed           
As MSJ's Rubik's cube club, Three Cubed aims to provide its members with a fun, low-key, and relaxed setting form them to cube without getting their cubes confiscated by teachers. Meetings are held every week in which students can learn new algorithms to solve 2x2x2, 3x3x3, or 4x4x4 cubes and can race against others on stack mats. Come and enhance your school year by learning to solve a Rubik's cube.

Traditional Chinese Calligraphy and Painting

Chinese Painting and Calligraphy is a place for students to learn more about Chinese art, which is distinctly different from that learned in the traditional art class. We help supervise and assist students in creating their own artworks. Once the students become comfortable with the medium, our club helps prepare their artworks for various competitions throughout the year. Furthermore, we will participate in local exhibitions held in the library and on campus.

Universal Performers

Contrary to popular belief, the Universal Performers do not actually perform around the universe, for it is simply too big for us to cover.  Actually, being a Universal Performer does not require you to be an active performing arts member at all!  The only requirement is that you love the performing arts(as an audience member or performer).  Whether it be Band, Theatre, Choral Music, or Technical Theatre, U.P. has a place for everyone.  A few of its wonderful benefits include discounts on the Fall Play, Spring Musical, and our annual Jazz Dance hosted at the Marriott Hotel.  In addition to discounts, as a U.P. member you are eligible to join us on thrilling and informative field trips three times a year to San Fransisco!  So if you love performing, watching performers, or just love the universe, come to the Little Theatre any or every Monday and join the fun that is U.P!

Writer's Block

The primary objective of Writers Block is to promote improvement in writing skills and academic performance through peer-editing, writing contest, and/or other methods. In peer-editing sessions, each member of the two-person team reviews and edits the others writing. The writing contests include both members-only as well as the open-to-all contests with prizes. The secondary objective of the club is to promote recreational writing through round-table sharing of each others leisure writing. In round-table sharing sessions, members take turn sharing and commenting on each others writings.

Yearbook

Memories... that is what the yearbook staff helps to maintain for the students at MSJ. You may not notice, but undercover photographers are omnipresent, taking professional candid stills that enhance the remarkable spreads about student life, academics, sports and organizations and people. The finest artists at MSJ design the full-color layout, and staff members work assiduously all year long to create a book students will keep for years to come. The yearbook staff invites students to submit their favorite pictures (preferably candid) to the yearbook room if they would like them to be published. Any students interested in becoming one of the yearbook crew can pick up an application near the end of first semester.

Youth Alive

Youth Alive, as Mission's Christian club, exists to provide an on-campus fellowship for believers from the different churches represented at MSJ. As a club, they aspire to encourage and support each other. Youth Alive aims to inspire members to be spiritually active both on and off campus. Through prayer meetings, socials, and praise nights, Youth Alive strives to grow as a Body of Christ and a witness to those around them. Everyone is Welcome!
