Principal's Message - February 2012 “It takes a Village to raise a child”
As we begin the new year, I want to remind all ninth, tenth and eleventh grade parents that pre-registration is just around the corner. Again this year, in conjunction with Mission’s SOS team, a time management worksheet to help you and your student determine the most appropriate course load based on all the activities both in and out of school will be included in the pre registration packet. This year SOS will again offer a variety of opportunities for parents and students to get answers to questions and concerns about a variety of topics including the “Rising Senior” workshop, parent forum nights and parent workshops for pre registration. Watch the website for dates and future events.
This month I would like to honor the teaching and support staff of Mission High. These unsung heroes work tirelessly to offer each student the best possible opportunity for both social and academic growth and while I don’t have the space to single out all the extracurricular activities our staff supports. Some examples are: Mr. Fendell who works with our debate club, Mr. Thomsen with the speech club, Mr. Geschke and Ms. Ishimine who committed hours to working with the science bowl candidates. Ms. Dotson and Ms. Cohen who are committed to excellence in producing our newspaper and yearbook work tirelessly on weekends and late into the evening hours, Ms. Benton who has built our DECA program to 150 strong and Mr. Brucker who has worked tirelessly with the Robotics teams on campus. To all the club advisors and field trip chaperones who are committed to bringing their curriculum and student talents alive. To our counselors and clerical staff as well as our custodians who work behind the scenes in keeping the school running. These are the individuals who are the heart and soul of creating the finest high school in the country. It is my honor to congratulate the following teachers as being identified by alumni now in their first year at MIT as being especially influential in their development. Congratulations to Ms. Evangeline Sugden, Mr.Geschke, Mr.Brucker, and Mr.Camacho.
Congratulations are also in order for Christine Wu. Her philanthropic efforts supported over 150 special needs students in Hualan, Taiwan. Apoorva Dornadula for being a National runner up and winner of the Bay Area Affiliate competition of the National Center for Women and Information Technology. She will receive her award at a luncheon in March. Manaswini Avvari for being selected as a YoungArts National Finalist. She performed on January 11 in Miami, Florida. Finally, congratulations to the wrestling team under the direction of Tom Thomsen who did extremely well in the Newark Ironman Wrestling tournament in December. William Booth, Corbin Lee, Alex Dornfest, David Kim placed first in either dual or individual events and Vinay Pathania placed second in dual and Swahib Kaba placed 3rd.
