Welcome to the Volunteer Opportunities at Warwick

Elementary School

Warwick Elementary is a 1998 California Distinguished School. Part of that recognition was due to the parental and community support of our programs. Our school thrives because of the special ways that parents help. So come join the fun! Look over the volunteer opportunities on this page and check out Warwick's many programs and activities available for our families.

Volunteer and get to know other parents, Warwick's staff, and your child's friends. Your enthusiasm will spill onto your child, and the rewards you receive for volunteering are many!

Below, volunteer programs are sorted by the type of help needed (note that some programs are listed in more than one category).  More detailed descriptions follow, listed alphabetically.  If you are interested in a PTA Board or Chair position, please click on the link above to get more information.  Copies of the Warwick Volunteer Handbook are available in the School's office.

Adopt-A-School Program: Businesses "adopt" Warwick and help the school throughout the year. Assistance ranges from donated supplies (e.g. copy paper) to time spent at school for various activities.

Art Work/Decorations: Create art work or decorations for various programs and events (e.g. decorations for our Staff appreciation luncheon). Some can be done at home.

Back to School Night: (September): An evening for parents to meet their children's teachers and hear about classroom policies and procedures. Learn how they grade and what is expected of your child. We encourage parents to leave children at home for this orientation.

Bakers: Provide baked goods for various events throughout the school year for after-school activities.

Book Fair: A fun opportunity for students to purchase great books for a week at reasonable prices. This event also benefits Warwick's library. The librarian needs help setting up and at the register during school hours and after school.

Bookleggers: Volunteers entice students in grades K through 6 to read by presenting summaries of irresistible books, without revealing the endings. Free training is provided by the Alameda County Library. There are Fall and Spring Training Classes.

General Mills Box Tops: Collect these from the products you purchase, and send them to school. PTA redeems the box tops for money to support the PTA. Volunteer help is needed to count and prepare the box tops for redemption. (This can be done at home).

Career Day: A day for students to learn about different jobs and careers. This event is held every other year and is usually a spring event.  Volunteers spend a morning talking to students about their job experiences and career paths. Representation from many different jobs is encouraged and appreciated.

Carnival: Our carnival offers a time for families to enjoy fun games, prizes, food and treats. Sponsored by PTA. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: Pre-carnival - copy flyers, food purchase, phone calling, organize games/prizes. Day of Carnival - set up, work in Kitchen, work in game booth, and clean up. This event is usually run by a committee of volunteers.

Classroom Events (Room Parent): Volunteers coordinate three classroom events annually; Halloween, Winter Holiday and Valentine's Day. Additional responsibilities of the Room Parent will be to recruit at least 2 volunteers per class to help with PTA events (e.g. Turkey Trot).

Classroom Helpers: Some teachers can use help in the classroom once a week. Assistance is needed in correcting papers, art projects, math labs or other special activities.

Family Nights: Warwick offers fun and educational evenings to share with all members of your family. Movie Night is an annual event that is very popular. Other events include Literacy and Math nights.

Founder's Day: An annual celebration in February to honor founding of the National PTA, and a chance to recognize outstanding Warwick volunteers in an evening assembly. Volunteers are needed on the committee to coordinate the evening program.

Hearing Testing: The nurse needs assistance during the hearing testing. Volunteers are needed to escort students from the class to the testing area. Help is usually required in October.

Hospitality: This committee helps the Hospitality Chairperson with set up of refreshments for special events and with phone calling for bakers (which can be done in the evening hours.) The hospitality committee also welcomes new students and their families to Warwick Elementary School.

International Night: This is a celebration of cultural diversity and is held in the Spring. A committee is needed to organize the potluck (i.e. flyers) and the entertainment.

Interpreters: If you know how to speak a foreign language, we could use your help to relay information to parents that are more comfortable with their own language.

Lunch Yard Duty: Four parents are employed as supervisors to help ensure the safety of our children at lunch time. The hours are from 11:00 - 1:00 pm, Monday - Friday. This is a paid position, but volunteers are always needed too!

MAGIC (Music, Art and Geography in Concert): Volunteers present lessons in the classrooms that focus on the music, art and culture of different areas around the world. MAGIC introduces the students to five new lessons each year. Training materials, lesson plans and all supplies are provided at no cost. Volunteers are needed about 4-6 times per school year to teach lessons or assist as art helpers.

Photocopying: The teachers and office staff need assistance in photocopying. Volunteers are asked to work for 2-4 hours (during school hours) once a week on a regular basis.

PTA: PTA is the voice of parents and community members at our school. Support this great organization with your membership each September. You will be part of the greatest child advocacy group in the nation. PTA meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7pm in the library.  Everyone is invited to attend PTA meetings.

Red Ribbon Week: This week in October is full of educational activities to promote and celebrate a drug-free life. Its goal is to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. The campaign advocates a zero tolerance stance to underage alcohol use and to any use of illegal drugs by a person of any age. Volunteers are needed for a committee to coordinate and distribute prizes.

Reflections: The Reflections program offers students opportunities to create works of art for fun and recognition. Students in K-6 are encouraged to create and submit works of art in five areas; literature, musical composition, dance, photography and the visual arts (which include drawing, painting, print making and collage).

Safety Team: Our school is prepared in the event of a disaster. This team of volunteers and staff members creates the plans and determines the supplies. This committee meets 3 times yearly or as needed.

Scholarship: PTA awards a scholarship to an outstanding American High School senior who attended Warwick Elementary School. A committee of volunteers meets in the spring to select a winner.

School Pictures: Warwick provides the opportunity to purchase your child's photo twice annually. Official classroom and yearbook photos are taken in the fall, and casual school pictures are offered in the spring. Parents are needed to supervise and assist children during photography. Pictures are usually taken between 8:30am and 1:30pm for two consecutive days.

School Site Council: This is the leadership group for our school, comprised of volunteers and staff members. It creates the yearly plan (finances, curriculum and safety) for our school during monthly meetings (every third Tuesday of the month at 3:10pm). Everyone is invited to attend.

Staff Appreciation Week: A week in May to show Warwick staff how much they are appreciated by spoiling them with treats and a luncheon. Sponsored by PTA. Preparations begin in March. Help is needed to make simple gifts or treats, banners, decorations and organize a Friday luncheon.

6th Grade Activities: Volunteers are needed to organize the 6th grade picnic and promotion ceremony.

Turkey Trot: Warwick has ONLY ONE annual school-wide fund raiser. It is held in OctoberNovember and is known as the Turkey Trot walk-a-thon. All children are encouraged to participate. This fundraiser provides funds for field trips, classroom supplies, assemblies, PTA programs and much more.

Vision Testing: Vision testing takes place in the fall and spring. The nurse needs assistance escorting students to and from the testing site, and with organizing students for testing.

Warwick Performing Arts: An opportunity for the 3rd - 6th graders to enjoy their moment in the spotlight performing a musical. Students work with staff members and parent volunteers after school. Volunteer help is needed in set design and costumes. If you have any theater, choral, dance or stage experience, you are needed. Please speak with April Bishop or call her at x56018.

Yearbook: Students can purchase a yearbook which will include Warwick students as well as classroom and school wide events. This committee of volunteers begins meeting in December, and yearbooks are distributed in June.
