English as a Second Language

English as a Second Language
Our award-winning ESL program offers a variety of classes in reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, listening/speaking, and pronunciation. Seven levels of ESL, from beginning to advanced, will help you improve your English skills and build your confidence on the job, in school, and in the community.  Day, evening, and weekend classes are available to choose from, including distance learning courses. Our friendly experienced  instructors will help you achieve your educational and career goals.  A certificate of achievement is awarded to students as they complete  each level of ESL. Graduates of our ESL Program move on to our High School Diploma and GED programs, and to community colleges.

Our ESL Computer Lab is among the best in the Bay Area. Students come here during their ESL classes to practice English using a variety of ESL software and websites. In the special interest computer lab classes ESL students learn computer user skills and complete various projects in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. This year we were able to purchase the total Rosetta Stone software program version 3 with the funds the school received from the state for the learning benchmarks our students made on the standardized CASAS tests. We hope that this new software will help students progress even faster.

Registration Procedures
1. Adults (18 years of age or older) may join our ESL Program.

2. New students and students who have been out of class for three months or more must come to registration and take a placement test to enroll in a core ESL class. This process takes 2-3 hours. Please be on time. Do not bring children with you to the placement test - no babysitting is provided!

3. $15 Registration/Placement Test fee and Photo ID required at Registration.

4. No appointment is necessary for placement testing - just come at one of the scheduled times. However, pre-paying the testing fee before the day of the test may save you time.

Special Interest ESL classes do not require a placement test. You may register as long as you know the level of class you need. Choose your classes wisely: there are no refunds once class begins, and fees cannot be transfered to a different quarter.

Register early - classes may be canceled due to low enrollment.
