FEBRUARY 2012
WEEK THREE  February 7, 2012
Already some of the Ambassadors are starting to see paradigm shifts in their lives. The focus on this session was on "Be Proactive", as opposed to being in a reactive state that uses emotional withdrawls in those around them. One outstanding Ambassador already received his first gold pin for making a huge shift towards greatness. Well done Malik, we are all proud of you.

WEEK FOUR  February 14, 2012      Happy Valentines Day!
Today's focus continued on discussing being "Proactive" versus "Reactive". The ambassadors are freely using the vocabulary presented to them in a meaningful way during discussion time. The concept of "The Circle of Concern" vs "Circle of Influence", was introduced today and the Ambassadors took to it like pros.

 Circle of Concern and Influence

We examined what we can do instead of focusing on the worries over which we have no control.
By thinking of ways to be more PROACTIVE and addressing the things we can do something about makes our circle of influence grow and our circle of concern shrink.
The Ambassadors are excited to begin the task of fundraising for the school. We named our first service, "The Wristband Brigade". Look out for these and please support our fundraising effort school wide.
Devin was honored with a gold pin due to his thoughtfulness exhibited throughout the week. When a teacher thanked him, he replied,"I am just making emotional deposits". Well done!

WEEK FIVE  February 21, 2012

"What is Service Leaning?"
  • Is positive, meaningful and real to the students.
  • Involves cooperative rather than competitive experiences and thus promote skills associated with teamwork and community involvement and citizenship.
  • As a consequence of this immediacy of experience, service-learning is more likely to be personally meaningful to participants and to generate emotional consequences, to challenge values as well as ideas, and hence to support social, emotional and cognitive learning and development.
As part of the first stage in deciding on a project the students were placed in groups randomly.  Then brainstormed a variety of service learning projects that can be done at school, either in their classrooms or around the school property. The students were fully engaged and came up with some great ideas.

Students who engage in service-learning often come to believe that they can make a difference in their schools, communities, and society. They participate in service activities that often have an observable outcome, and they experience personal efficacy. For many students, service-learning provides one of the few venues where they can participate and be successful on a regular basis. This experience can be empowering in a very positive way, showing that pro-social contributions are the best pathway to success.

WEEK SIX  February 28, 2012

Groups were chosen and students were to collaboratively decide one service learning project from the previous week.
This second part of the process involved taking on leadership roles within each group, plan their project, and problem solve how it will happen.

The Ambassadors discussed the importance of wearing their Ambassador t-shirts on the days they do service learning projects or take part in events. The deciding factor that the Ambassadors brought up were; identity, building a positive school environment, and community spirit.

Ambassadors will be taking part in a school wide event on Saturday March 10th. Oliveira Elementary community will be having a mini "Make a Difference" day.
PLEASE JOIN US between 9am until 12pm. Support Oliveira Community and feel the Eagle Spirit!
