How can we demonstrate Excellence, Ethics, and Engagement in our learning in our ceramics class? How can I create quality ceramic assignments that demonstrate the use of the elements of art and the principles of design? Course Requirements Semester 1 The students will be given 8 assignments to complete. I will assign the technique to be used, but you will have freedom to be creative within that techniques. Usually about 1 piece of work will be evaluated every other week. Some projects will be relatively easy, while others will be more difficult. During this Semester there will be a series of table activities that will be graded also, along with an occasional quiz. During the first semester are also required to find and report on a ceramics gallery. The gallery does not have to be in Fremont. It can be part of a museum, or other galleries. The students will be given suggestions as the semester goes on. Semester 2 The students will be given 8 assignments to complete, plus a major FINAL project. The student will also be required to write a formal evaluation/critique on a selected project. This is a low stress assignment, but it is a requirement. A detailed list of projects for the second semester will be given at the start of the second semester. Students are required to keep a Process Journal. Process journals are a record of the process that you go through every time you create a project. It will record your successes and problems that arise. These are VERY important and you will be given a hand-out later. These process journals are NOT to be kept in another notebook I have a very specific way to do these and you will be given instructions on how to do them. I am very serious about journals There will be a lab fee of $40.00 per year. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. We supply the clay and glaze materials from this money. The materials are expensive, and without this lab fee, we couldnt run the program effectively. The fee will be collected the first week. Please get those fee in by that time. Students who do not pay after two week must supply themselves with the supplies they will need. Students who can not pay should see me. Grading Work will be graded on a point system that acknowledges: solving the problem (assignment), mastering a technique, expressiveness and originality, and overall appearance. Rubrics will be given for each assignment. All assignments, as well as class participation, will be given a point equivalent, and grades will be based on a percentage of the pointes accumulated. You will also be given a grade in your Ceramic Family (explained later) A= 100%-90% B=89%-80% C= 79%-70% D= 69%-60% Assignments Semester 1 Safety quiz 8 projects Review/critique Semester final Process journal Class participation Semester 2 7 projects Final project formal critique semester final process journal class participation 45 points are awarded each quarter for class participation.
